Vandals leave human waste during nonprofit burglary

Monster Moms organization is struggling to recover.

SAN ANTONIO — What happened at a small east San Antonio nonprofit organization over the weekend is scarier than their name.

This mission of Monster Moms is to help some of the most vulnerable moms and kids in town but now they need help.

Monster Moms founder Tia Gibson said when she returned from the long weekend on Monday, she was heartbroken to discover someone had broken into and trashed their office.

In a video shared to social media, Gibson walks from room to room, taking note of the devastation.

Electronics like laptops and pads were stolen. Food trash was strewn about. The thieves ransacked offices, using desk drawers to cart away the goods, leaving the desks useless.

They threw framed art work on the floor and walked on it and stole the art supplies used by children as they recover from the trauma caused by violence and neglect, Gibson said.

But the worst of the damage was in one office where the vandals left human waste on the floor.

Narrating the video of the incident, Gibson said "I looked in this room and that's when I saw the poop and the pee, which is disgusting. They pooped on the floor and then they used donated baby clothes to wipe themselves."

Gibson says she is not sure how the thieves gained entry into the building, which is on the campus of the Ella Austin Community Center in the 1000 block of North Pine, but she believes they spent a long time inside.

In one storage room, she said she found a blanket on the floor as if someone had been there long enough to rest for a bit.

The space, in the iconic east side help center, is new to Gibson. She said “I never even finished moving in. I never put the rest of my stuff in here and I haven’t even had time to install a sign outside,” Gibson said.

Gibson said police dusted several areas for fingerprints, but she isn’t sure if they found any evidence that will help identify the vandals.

Through tears and laughter, Gibson said she would stay true to her mission of helping people in trouble.

“It’s made me back up a couple of steps but it’s not something a giant can’t handle,” Gibson said, adding “I am a monster!”

“We are all monster moms in some fashion, right?” Gibson said, laughing and promising to continue to change the world for the better.
