San Antonio officers and investigators were on the scene of an apparent standoff near Lackland Air Force Base San Antonio Sunday.

Officers said the standoff lasted just under two hours and ended when 22-year-old Hector Morales-Esquivel shot and killed himself.

Police said it all started around 2 a.m. after a party at the Crestwood Apartments located off West Military Drive south of Lackland Air Force base.

Witnesses told investigators Esquivel became angry and was threatening to get a gun. Police said Esquivel then left the party and returned with a gun.

Police said Esquivel kept himself in the apartment along with a woman and six to eight children.

Officials told Eyewitness News they were able to communicate with the suspect through an open door and by phone.

Around 3:45 a.m. police said they heard one gunshot. When they entered the apartment they said they found Esquivel dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The woman and children were not injured, said police.

Police did say the suspect had previous warrants, but it was not immediately clear why he became angry or held authorities in a standoff.
