San Antonians sound off on where to get the best tamales in the Alamo City

As Christmas approaches, KENS 5 asked Facebook fans to weigh in on the best places in town to get tamales and they sounded off by the hundreds!

SAN ANTONIO — Holidays in South Texas usually include the warm and delicious comfort of tamales. And here in San Antonio, there are plenty of places to unwrap the goodness.

As Christmas approaches, KENS 5 asked Facebook fans to weigh in on the best places in town to get tamales and they sounded off by the hundreds!

While many Facebook fans said the best tamales were their own or a family member's tamales, there were three places that rose to the top in mentions. Those were Delia's, Tellez Tamales and Barbacoa, and Delicious Tamales.

"Delia’s Tamales are the Best Tasting Tamales in Texas!" one Facebook fan said.

Another Facebook fan actually broke it down by type, saying she prefers different places depending on which flavor ishe is after.

"Tellez for pork. Delicious for chicken. Delia's for bean cheese n jalapeño and spicy chicken with cheese," Michelle Perez said.

With high inflation this year, budget is on the minds of many people this holiday season. People in the comments had great recommendations for affordable options.

"La Grande on Castroville Rd. $13 Dozen. Best Flavor, Fat, Juicy Perfect Beautiful Tamales. Best staff. Many compliments when I bring them to parties," Carlos Correa said.

"HEB Mi Tiendita tamales are the best. They are next to homemade. And you can’t beat the price. Try the cheese and jalapeño, but in reality, they’re all good. You will not regret buying them. at this time they run out pretty fast," Elida H. Lopez said.

Other honorable mentions include Del Rio, Don Molino's, Ruben's Handmade Tamales and Adelitas. For those living a meatless lifestyle, La Hacienda was recommended for its vegan tamales, which are enjoyed by veggies and meateaters alike.

If you are in a hurry or hitting the road to travel, there was one unlikely recommendation for the tamales at Stripes/Laredo Taco Company. Their website says they offer green chile chicken and pork tamales. Give them a try, you could discover a hidden gem right on the highway!
