Plant-based tacos, tortas headline menu at downtown taqueria | Neighborhood Eats

The owner said the goal of her menu is to enable guests to order what they are familiar with eating when it comes to Mexican food.

Heart disease and high cholesterol plague many of us. For some, it makes eating a challenge but one local restaurant owner is cooking up an alternative for those who still want to enjoy their favorite Mexican food with all of the flavor.

This week, Neighborhood Eats is checking out Plantaqueria.

In 2020, Owner Sofia Renteria started her restaurant as a small batch vegan tamal company. When that took off, she expanded her menu and opened up shop in downtown San Antonio. The local favorite headlines the menu: The breakfast taco.

"That's the goal is it for it to look like what you're familiar eating," said Renteria.

Renteria uses vegan friendly ingredients to fill the tacos such as soy chorizo, jackfruit and nopales. Depending on your style, orders can come on handmade corn or vegan flour tortillas. Even without the lard, the tortillas were just as tender and delicious!

Not in the mood for tacos? Tortas are also on the menu, which is served on a buttered bolillo roll filled with your choice of protein. Veggies give it a nice crunch between bites.

We wrapped our meal with a taste test of scratch made aguas frescas and brewchata. The morning drink is made up a blend of cold brew coffee and plant-based horchata.

Plantaqueria is located at 124 Broadway.
