She's built an empire producing handcrafted jewelry worn by celebrities and socialites around the world. But San Antonio based jewelry designer, Claudia Lobao, said the greatest reward for her is giving back to her community.

Lobao is sharing her knowledge, craft, and business savvy with survivors of domestic violence. "They're in a situation where they see no light. The shelter gives them so much support, but they need a job," said Lobao.

The intricate work is a labor of love for Lobao. "They are working on my new collection. It's called Fresh Start. It's a new beginning for them and for me."

For her artisan apprentice, who we are calling "Monique" to protect her identity, working for Lobao serves as hope for her future. "A lot of women who come here are broken; our self esteem is taken away," said Monique.

The Battered Women and Children's Shelter helped Monique get out of an abusive relationship and now with the help of Lobao, they're teaching Monique and others like her, a new trade. "This work is a step for them for life. I want them to find their niche, what they love to do, find their passion," said Lobao.

Lobao moved part of her production from Brazil, to the shelter. There she said she can continue her mission by empowering women and helping them rebuild their lives.

"I'm giving them a job, it's not a charity. I'm just helping them see the light," said Lobao.

"It's been such an emotional uplift for them. It's provided a lot of opportunity for independence," said Adrianna Garza-Gongora with the Battered Women and Children's Shelter.

The women's work will be placed in 600 stores around the world including Julian Gold in San Antonio. Monique said knowing someone will buy and wear a piece she has made is very meaningful. "Once I saw that I was making stuff that was so pretty, so elegant, it boosted my morale little by little at a time," Monique said.

Monique said Lobao has taught her she can have a fresh start in life and she plans to do that, never looking back again.
