The Fisher House is celebrating a quarter-century at Fort Sam Houston, and for 22 of those years, smoke has been involved because of really good barbecue.

Fewer things personify appreciation in Texas like fresh-smoked brisket.

Serving those who've served is second nature for folks at the Fisher House, like Donna Lowery, whose husband served in the Coast Guard.

"I was in a coma for a very long time period of time," she said.

A coma didn't stop her from helping out at the Fisher House.

"When I woke up, all my limbs were gone," she said.

Not even losing her legs and arms to jaundice keeps her from being there for servicemen and women.

"My situation is nowhere near the combat wounds that they've endured. I could nowhere compare my situation to theirs."

What she says she can do is show them that life goes on.

"I listen to their stories and I try to help them through what they're going through," she said.

Donna says hope, more than anything, is what she gives them, having been through despair herself.

"They can't give up, and I don't want to let them."
