Serviceman wants to install HVAC system for free for Indiana family burning wood to stay warm

Both Keith and Marilyn Crumbo were overwhelmed by the support from the community.

PEKIN, Indiana — Just hours after watching WHAS11 News, Heating and A/C serviceman Mark Cramer felt moved to help Keith and Marilyn Crumbo in Pekin, Indiana.

"My first thought was 'we got to help this gentleman,'" Cramer said.

He's promising to get their their HVAC unit replaced after their contractor Aaron McKinley was charged with theft and put in jail.

"People that we don't even know are in support for what's going on," Keith said.

Cramer saw the Crumbo's were using their wood stove to stay warm and wanted to help.

He's been in Jeffersonville for three weeks temporarily assisting Becht Givens Service Experts.

"I called my senior management and they agreed, they said lets see what we can do to help this gentleman out, so I'm here," Cramer said.

Keith said the outpouring of support means a lot. They've been burning wood since October.

Both him and Marilyn were shocked by how fast the community responded after being on WHAS11 News.

"Well. I can't thank everybody enough' I mean I wasn't expecting this, and it just cause out of nowhere, I mean, the phone calls," Keith said.

Several contractors have been in contact with the Crumbo's and now Cramer said he wants to make sure they get what they need.

"There's a big weight taken off of my shoulders because when this gets done I won't have to work with ol' smokey everyday and carrying wood and that kind of stuff," Keith said.

Cramer works for Service Experts, an HVAC company based outside Chicago. He said they look for opportunities to give back.

"What happened here was just tragic; there is so many people in this society that take advantage of people, prey on the elderly and it bothers me," he said.

Cramer told WHAS11 he plans to get the proper parts to install an HVAC unit at no cost.

"You know it's just unbelievable; I can't thank everybody enough, you know my wife feels the same way," Keith said.

Cramer said once the proper parts are in they will arrange a day to install the unit.

Either way, the Crumbo's said they are grateful.
