Area cities consider future of e-scooters

The city councils in Kirby and Alamo Heights have talked about restricting dockless scooters in recent meetings.

You always see e-scooters whizzing across San Antonio. At least one San Antonio suburb could keep that from ever happening on its streets.

The Kirby city council is discussing a ban of e-scooters. The city manager told KENS 5 that they'll consider regulations in March or April. One council member asked to discuss the idea after seeing scooters left near bus stops in Kirby.

Meanwhile, Alamo Heights held a meeting Monday evening to discuss dockless e-scooters and e-bicycles. According to a spokesperson, Alamo Heights City Council directed staff to proceed with building an ordinance. That ordinance would include include indemnification, registration of vendor along with proof of insurance, establishing the age of the driver, designating nesting locations and prohibiting nesting in areas that would prevent accessibility of wheelchairs.

The proposal will return to the Alamo Heights City Council for final review and consideration of approval at the end of February.
