Former KENS 5 sports anchor and reporter Gary Delaune underwent a triple bypass surgery Tuesday.

Delaune's daughter, Andrea, told Eyewitness News:

He's doing great thus far. Everything looks like a full recovery. Our family would like to thank everyone for the many kind wishes and prayers he's received. He is extremely fortunate that they caught the blockage in time and he did not suffer a heart attack and also for the wonderful care he has received at the Methodist Hospital.

Delaune covered some of the nation's largest news stories during his career. While working in Dallas, he broke the news to over 600 news stations in 1963 that President John F. Kennedy had been shot. He was also on scene reporting when Lee Harvey Oswald was shot the next day.

Delaune, 81, worked at KENS 5 as a reporter, sports anchor and producer for nearly 29 years before leaving the station in 1998. He covered many big news events, including the Fiesta sniper in 1979. He has also done play-by-play for high school stadiums in San Antonio.

On air, Delaune was also known for his attire. Ray Silva, a director at KENS 5, called him "The Craig Sager of TV news."

Delaune was recently nominated for the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame class of 2015. The ceremony will be Feb. 28.
