14-year-old charged with murder, accused of shooting cousin during botched drive-by on northwest side

Jesus E. Zamores, 18, was shot and killed by his 14-year-old cousin while they were trying to shoot another teen who was waiting at a bus stop, investigators said.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A 14-year-old was arrested and charged with felony murder after killing his cousin in a drive-by shooting on Monday morning, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

Gonzalez said the teen was booked into the juvenile detention center on Tuesday.

Gonzalez said the person who was killed was Jesus E. Zamores, 18. Gonzalez said the cousins were in the car together when they opened fire on another teen who was waiting for the school bus.

What happened

Gonzalez said the Harris County Sheriff's Office responded to a call around 6:30 a.m. about a shooting near the intersection of East Marsham Circle and Antoine Drive on the northwest side.

When investigators got to the scene, they found a car that had crashed into a house. The driver was dead. A witness said someone ran away from the scene after the crash.

Investigators learned the car the suspects were driving was stolen from a home about two miles from the scene.

Deputies said they were told by a witness that the two suspects pulled up in the car and opened fire at a teen who was waiting for the bus. When the teen who was targeted ran away, the suspects allegedly circled back and tried to shoot him again. That's when deputies said they think the driver was accidentally shot.

Surveillance video showed the teen walking down the street and then sprinting back home as gunshots rang out. No one at the bus stop was injured.

Deputies haven't announced a motive, but according to the mother of the 16-year-old who was targeted, everyone involved in the incident used to be friends until she said her son told her they got into some sort of argument.

Four people were inside the house that was hit by the car. No one was injured.

A neighbor said she was home with her three kids, getting them ready for school, when they heard the gunshots. She said she took cover but her car was hit twice during the shooting.
