'We shouldn't be having a vigil; we should be having a celebration' | Hundreds honor pregnant murder victim

Savanah Soto and her unborn child, Fabian, were found dead the day after Christmas. Police say it's a capital murder investigation.

SAN ANTONIO — On Thursday, hundreds of people gathered at Kenwood Park to honor a pregnant murder victim and her unborn child.

Savanah Soto, 18, and her boyfriend Matthew Guerra, 22, were found dead inside of a locked car the day after Christmas. Police say they suffered gunshot wounds.

Before the vigil started, police provided an update on the investigation. The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) released surveillance video that shows an unknown person behind the wheel of the couple’s car, and another person driving a dark Chevy Silverado.

The couple’s death is considered a capital murder case, according to police.

“Whoever [did it] was a coward,” sobbed Savanah’s grandmother, Rachel Soto. “They didn’t have a heart, but I have mercy on their soul.”

First, Rachel lost her grandson, Ethan Soto. The 15-year-old was murdered last year.

Now, she’s also mourning the death of her granddaughter and great-grandson.

Savanah was set to give birth to a baby boy last weekend, who she planned to name Fabian.

“We shouldn’t be having a vigil; we should be having a celebration of her and her baby,” said Rachel. “[Fabian] would have been my 10th great-grandchild. Now, we won’t see [Savanah] anymore, only in pictures. It will never be the same again.”

Loved ones released doves and balloons over Kenwood Park where there are now two new trees; one for Ethan and one for Savanah.

“We just have to keep her in our hearts and remember the way she was, not the way she left,” Rachel said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover funeral expenses.
