West-side food pantry needs help

"We are a church of the poor, but we are rich in spirit," said Pastor Vincent Robinson at Harpers Chapel Ministries.

SAN ANTONIO — Harpers Chapel Ministries in the heart of the west side is in dire need of help. Its food pantry is running very low. Bins and its freezer are empty. The non-profit gives out food to the people who need it most.

Pastor Vincent Robinson is calling on the community for help.

"We are a church of the poor, but we are rich in spirit," he said. "We do so much in this ministry.

Pastor Robinson grew up in the neighborhood and truly knows the area.

"78207 areas is one of the most impoverished zip codes in San Antonio," Robinson said.  "High food insecurity, high dropout rate as well."

He also added it is a resilient community too.  The church is located off Lombrano Street near North Zarzamora.

"Monday through Friday are doors are open for our homeless community, our doors are open for our youth after they come out of school," he said. "Right now there is a big need."

The pastor showed the pantry and how it is running low on food. Bins and shelves are empty, including its freezer. It heavily relies on donations to help the community.

"We are serving not just the west side community here," he said. "We also serve the surrounding area."

Robinson said times are tough for people and the need is even greater now.

"It has been rough, and I think it is because people are losing their jobs, a lot more people are just reluctant to just want to give," he said. "People's lights are getting cut off. There is just no way for them to make it.

The pastor highlighting there is no judgment at all for people who need to help.

"We want to make sure they are fed," he said. "We want to make sure they are taken care and nurtured, even our homeless community. We want to make sure they are safe."
