NEW YORK (AP) -- Longtime character Abe Vigoda has died. The man who starred as Detective Fish in "Barney Miller" and Sal Tessio in "The Godfather" died Tuesday at his daughter's home in New Jersey. He was 94, and his daughter said he died of old age, adding "This man was never sick."
Vigoda rose to fame after being cast as a Mafia don in "The Godfather" who looked to take over the New York organized crime scene. His tired-looking weather-beaten face and laconic manner as an over-the-hill detective in "Barney Miller" made him a fan favorite.
He did a number of other character parts in movies including "Cannonball Run II," ''Look Who's Talking," ''Joe Versus the Volcano" and "North."
