HOUSTON — A turkey giveaway for seniors was held in Sunnyside Saturday, highlighting the impact inflation has had on many.
Sharon Alexander was one of those who showed up.
“Everything is just so expensive now, it will get better,” she said.
Alexander says she has a lot on her plate with bills and other rising costs.
One plate she won’t have to worry about is Thanksgiving dinner, thanks to the event that was put on by Gulf Coast Family Foundation and Watkins Supermarket.
"It means a great deal, that way my family and I can have a gathering,” she said.
The event's 100 free turkeys and hams were cleared out within an hour.
Juanita Jimenez-Soto with AARP Texas said rising inflation has created a greater need for the senior community.
“Inflation is hitting everyone as you can imagine the prices of goods and services have gone up," she said.
She said many seniors are looking to cut costs.

"The holidays, as you can imagine, are going to be maybe a little steeper for a lot of seniors. They are on fixed incomes," she said.
Jimenez-Soto said recent trends show a number of those 55-plus are living in multi-generational households.
"When you help a senior citizen you may be helping them and their extended family," she said. "These homes have aunts and uncles in them. "
James Campbell with Gulf Coast Family Foundation said the event is something they're planning to do every year going forward.
“Be a blessing, that’s what we wanted to do. We were able to help some of the seniors that probably wouldn’t be able to purchase these items."
