World's Strongest Firefighter from Toledo lifts spirits of woman at hospice care facility

Marcus Waugh from TFRD went to a hospice facility to visit a woman after she recognized him as the World's Strongest Firefighter during a lift assist last month.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A fireman with the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department, who recently earned the title of World's Strongest Firefighter, doesn't just lift weights, he lifts spirits too.

Marcus Waugh went to a hospice care facility in Toledo to visit a woman after she recognized him as the World's Strongest Firefighter during a lift assist last month at a nursing home.

On March 19, Waugh and Jackson Lamb from TFRD responded to a nursing home for an elderly patient who had fallen but was otherwise OK.

When Waugh and Lamb arrived at the facility, the patient and her daughter recognized Waugh from TV after he was highlighted for being named the World's Strongest Firefighter at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus in March.

Toledo Fire said in a social media post that the patient was "thrilled" to have the World's Strongest Firefighter help her to bed, even sharing her excitement with others for days following the lift assist.

That's when staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, where the patient is now, contacted TFRD to arrange a surprise visit from Waugh, who cleared his schedule and visited the patient on his day off to gift her a TFRD challenge coin.

"Firefighter Waugh's compassion far outweighs any competitive event victory he could achieve," TFRD said.

Toledo Fire shared pictures of Waugh visiting the woman at the hospice care facility:

On March 2, Waugh beat out 119 other athletes in the World's Strongest Firefighter competition and received the award from none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger himself.
