Maricopa County Sheriff's Office K9 passes away from 'bloat'

Kimbo, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, died suddenly from a condition known as 'bloat' in early May.

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of a K9 named Kimbo described as "a powerhouse of a dog," an "amazing partner," and "the ideal police canine."

MCSO said Kimbo was found unresponsive in his indoor, air-conditioned kennel on May 1 during a routine check. He was taken to a veterinarian, who said the K9 had died.

The veterinarian said Kimbo died from a combination of splenic torsion and gastric dilatation-volvulus, which is also known as bloat.

The 4-year-old Belgian Malinois had worked with the MCSO SWAT team "numerous" times and had also assisted with patrols in districts across Maricopa County.
