'The BFG' debuts at the Magik Theatre while ushering in 30th anniversary year

The performance is an adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved novel about a 10-year-old girl who befriends a benevolent giant who takes her to Giant Country.

SAN ANTONIO — A huge new production is set to debut at the Magik Theatre in May.

"The BFG Big Friendly Giant" opens on Saturday, May 4. The performance is an adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved novel about a 10-year-old girl who befriends a benevolent giant who takes her to Giant Country. They end up working together to save British children from some of the BFG's very unfriendly fellow giants.

The production closes out the Magik Theatre's 2023-2024 season while kicking off its 30th anniversary year. The theatre will hold a 30th birthday party celebration during opening night on May 4. The new 2024-2025 season will also be announced during the anniversary party.

In the lobby, partygoers will be able to check out an exhibit of Magik’s most historic moments, and a crafts table will allow younger audience members to make their own dream jars. After the 6 p.m. performance, audience members can grab a cupcake or glass of champagne and toast to 30 years.

The theatre opened in 1994 as just a small, family-run theatre troupe. It has grown into an iconic fixture in the San Antonio performing arts scene and serves more than 44,000 patrons at its Hemisfair location.
