Thousands of people filled the streets of La Villita for NIOSA

NIOSA is a four-night festival in La Villita and more than 10,000 volunteers bring the event to life every year.

Thousands of people packed into the heart of the city tonight for one of Fiesta's most beloved traditions - A Night In Old San Antonio (NIOSA).

Sally Gildart has been volunteering for NIOSA for more than four decades and became the chairman of Crispy Beef Tacos in 1976. "My employer had a booth down here and he asked me to be a co-chairman," Gildart said. "I was his co-chairman for years and years. When he retired, I got the booth."

Gildart's son even started volunteering at the young age of 14. He is still volunteering for NIOSA today.

Just down the street in the French Quarter section, you'll find the Escargot booth that also has two generations of volunteers working to bring a unique flavor to NIOSA.

"You can't get it anywhere else," said Dottie Rios, Chairman of the Escargot booth. "We have people literally coming over here asking to have this first before we run out."

Rios said she started volunteering 15 years ago. She said asked her friends, who are hearing impaired, to join her and help represent their community.

"My parents are deaf," Rios said. "Just having deaf people understand that there is still fun out here to have a good time. We're here to show that we can volunteer, too."

The festival helps raise money for the San Antonio Conservation Society and continues on through Friday, April 27.
