Secret springs in San Antonio are flowing

Did you know there are secret springs in east San Antonio? With all this recent rain, they are now bursting.

Did you know there are secret springs in east San Antonio? With all this recent rain, they are now bursting.

Martin Luther King at Salado Creek is a spot where, every year, thousands of people gather to begin the big march.

All of that happens to the west, but if you turn and go north instead, it's a whole different world, one that few people have ever seen.

It’s not a trip for the timid because there are spiders, biting bugs and plenty of poison ivy. But, in the deep woods, springs are springing.

“It's really neat to see. There are little openings on the surface of the ground where things can bubble out,” said Terri Herbold with the Edwards Aquifer Authority. “It's like a big rock with a lot of holes in it and water seeps in and out of the holes.”

It's a magical place and time, where Mother Nature can speak for herself.

Springs start to flow when the aquifer is at about 670 feet. Tuesday's reading was about 677, so we're several feet into the flow.
