Escape hole discovered in Bexar County jail, suspects in custody

BCSO said increased security measures at the jail thwarted this latest escape attempt.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas - An escape hole was discovered in the Bexar County jail Thursday morning.

This comes one day after the Texas Commission on Jail Standards Inspection report showed the Bexar County Sheriff's Office had prior evidence of inmates' escape plan that happened last month.

BCSO said Ramon Medellin, Jr. and Martin Herrera are the inmates suspected in connection with the escape attempt. Herrera was originally booked into the jail on charges related to prostitution and human trafficking. Medellin had been charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Herrera is reportedly the main suspect in this case, but BCSO said Medellin was aware of the hole and possible escape.

Unlike the March escape incident, no contraband was used to form the escape hole discovered Thursday, according to BCSO.

As KENS 5 previously reported, three inmates facing charges related to homicides escaped from the Bexar County jail and were later apprehended.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said the BCSO employee who reportedly knew about the past escape in early March remains on administrative leave.

The 'breakage' was discovered in the outer structure of the jail by the Contraband Abatement Team (CAT).

"This was an escape attempt which was foiled before it came to fruition. No actual escape

occurred," BCSO said.
