Congressman Joaquin Castro speaks at first March For Our Lives SA town hall

Dozens of people of all ages attended the town hall meeting. Many students and parents asked questions regarding gun control and reform to the congressman.

United States Congressman Joaquin Castro joined March for Our Lives-San Antonio for their first town hall meeting on Saturday.

The student-led organization was created following the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Sophia Mendez, a co-organizer for the group, said that they invited Congressman Castro to join the conversation to end gun violence prior the high school shooting in Santa Fe.

"This is just one step towards making a change," Mendez said. "We were able to bring up other situations such as the climate in our society with conversations between guns and mental health awareness."

Dozens of people of all ages attended the town hall meeting. Many students and parents asked questions regarding gun control and reform to the congressman.

"It's great to see so many young people pushing for change and for gun reform," Congressman Castro said. "I hope that they know that their voice matters and that they are making a difference and that they are changing people's minds and changing the minds of politicians by speaking up."

In addition to gun control, other issues such as suicide, mental health, and anti-bullying were discussed.

"Even when we're teenagers and we can't vote, to know that he is going to take those words home, it feels really good to know at least one adult is listening to us,” Mendez said.

March for Our Lives-SA plans to host another rally next weekend. More details are expected to be released by the organization this week.
