SA mom on a mission to make prom magical for teens in need

The 2018 prom will be the 4th year of Project Prom Dress.

SAN ANTONIO — A local mom is on a mission to make prom magical for every San Antonio teen.

Ashley Johnson created a non-profit that distributes formal wear to students just in time for the high school tradition.

“This is my favorite time of year,” said Johnson as she sorts through thousands of dresses. She is preparing the colorful gowns for anxious high schoolers.

As long as you’re a high school junior or senior you can get outfitted.

The 2018 prom will be the 4th year of Project Prom Dress which has helped hundreds of girls and even some boys get ready for prom. The experience is meant to take away any worry of cost.

“I think prom is a rite of passage. It’s something like graduation that kids will only experience one time and a lot of times they can’t go because of the cost,” said Johnson. “It just helps get that burden off of the parents and to know hey, there’s an organization out there that’s willing to help these kids.”

Johnson remembers her senior prom. The daughter of a single mom, she saved her own money to buy a light blue dress. The memory drives Johnson to continue the non-profit even after her oldest daughter’s prom passed.

Accepting donations throughout the year, the dresses are distributed at several spring events.

The teens are also matched up with hair stylists and makeup artists who have donated their services to finish off the look.

Johnson says prom maybe just one night but for many teens, it’s about making memories of a lifetime.

The formal wear is given out at different spots around town.

San Antonio teens can pick out a prom dress Saturday, April 7th at Edison High School between 10 am and 3 pm.

Project Prom Dress is also accepting dress donations along with shoes, accessories, and hair or makeup services. Men’s formal wear is also welcomed. Contact Ashley at (210) 504-7766 to coordinate your donation.
