Over 1 million meals collected so far for Million Summer Meals

The fourth year of the Million Summer Meals for Kids is well underway. The program is a partnership between KENS 5 and the San Antonio Food Bank.

"It is so heartwarming to see the support of the community. People are doing their grocery shopping. People are coming out... taking from their carts to give to people in need," said Susan Filyk with the San Antonio Food Bank.

This year Million Summer Meals for Kids has already collected over one million meals, and we're just getting started.

"The San Antonio community has been involved with Express Lube and coming to our locations for 27 years, so we wanted to give back to our community," Express Lube District Manager Jed Mowell said.

Mary was one of the many who donated to our bucket at H-E-B on Friday evening. Why did she do it? She says because there's been times she's had no food herself.

"[I donate] anytime there's a need for help because one time I was unfortunate we lived from meal to meal," Mary said.

"It's awesome to see people get out here and provide for people who can't provide for themselves," Mowell added.

What items are most in need?

"Peanut butter, any nonperishable food item is good, cereal, soups, macaroni and cheese, anything that kids like," Filyk noted.

You can donate food at any one of the drop-off locations we have listed on KENS5.com/MillionMeals or you can also donate money online or at any H-E-B. You can do it right at the register and donate one, three, or five dollars with the pull-tabs they have and help feed kids this summer.
