Hundreds of people pitched in on Thursday to help one of the victims of the Sutherland Springs mass shooting.
The Mission-Alamo Lodge, Lone Oak Lodge, and the Young Marines held a “Hamburger Fundraiser” for Sutherland Springs victim Kris Workman at the San Antonio Hermann Sons Home Association.
Cecily Kelly, member benefits coordinator for Hermann Sons Life said that many of the employees knew someone impacted by the Sutherland Springs shooting and they knew they had to help.
"Just to know and see what they go through every day, we had to do something," Kelly said.
Workman was shot in the spine, leaving him a paraplegic. He is still continuing his recovery.
"He's said from the beginning is, his legs were a small price to pay for his life," Workman's grandmother Natalie Rivas said. "He knows that God saved him for a reason and he wants that reason to be known to everyone."
Rivas said that the family is trying to help Workman buy or modify a home to accommodate his needs.
"He's got to get into a handicap home, and that's one of the reasons all these fundraisers are coming about as well, to help him build a home because the trailer is just not built for handicap accessibility," Rivas said.
Before November 5, 2017, Workman was an avid race car driver and Rivas said that he hopes to get back on the track again.
"That's one of his passions is racing, and he's working towards making that come true as well. And I know he will. He will be back racing on that track soon," Rivas said.
Saturday marks the six month anniversary of the shooting at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs that left 26 people dead on November 5, 2017.
"He still has a long way to go yet but, you know, 5.5 months later and he's back at work and I'm amazed at him," Rivas said.
All 300 tickets were sold Thursday, raising $2,100.
Hermann Sons Life Insurance plans to present a check to Workman within the next two weeks.
Workman was unable to attend the fundraiser. Rivas said that he was heading to Dallas with friend Stephen Willeford to attend the NRA's National Convention.
Willeford is known for his heroism the day of the Sutherland Springs mass shooting. Rivas said that Willeford was asked to speak at the convention this weekend.
