Community rallies behind Boerne police officer who was hit while directing traffic

Police said Officer Michele Van Stavern was wearing a high-visibility traffic vest and holding a wand flashlight to direct traffic.

BOERNE, Texas — Update: A prayer service will be held for a full and speedy recovery of Boerne Police Officer Michele Van Stavern. It will take place on Tuesday,  7 p.m., at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on 202 W. Kronkosky Street.  

SPECIAL PRAYER SERVICE: An ecumenical prayer service will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church for the full and speedy recovery of Boerne Police Michele Van Stavern. The service will be led by Rev. Norman Ermis, pastor, staff and parishioners of St. Peter's community on Tuesday, September 3 at 7:00 pm at St.

Captain Steve Perez, Boerne Police Department, said:

"Michele is still in the hospital and slowly recovering. Today was the first day she was able to get up and walk on her own. As you may have heard, Michele sustained a deep laceration to the back of her head, another deep laceration to her left forearm, and a fractured right wrist, along with some broken ribs. It is a miracle she is alive and walking today. The Van Stavern’s would like to say thank you for all the support they have received and Michele is eager to get back to work."

Boerne Police Officer Michele Van Stavern was directing traffic outside the Boerne High School stadium when a man driving a pick-up struck Officer Stavern, police said.

The incident took place around 10 p.m. Friday outside the north entrance of the stadium after the Champion High School football game.

Police said the officer was wearing a high-visibility traffic vest and holding a wand flashlight to direct traffic.

Andrew Harris, 35, was traveling southbound on North Esser Road in his Ford F150 when he hit the officer, police said. 

Harris stopped at the scene and was arrested by a Texas DPS Trooper. He will be charged with Intoxication Assault and was taken to the Kendall County Jail.

Stavern sustained serious injuries to her left arm and head and was taken to University Hospital, Kendall County EMS said. Authorities said she is in stable condition as of Saturday, 7:30 a.m.

Press Release On Friday, August 30, 2019, at 10:09 PM, Boerne Police Officer Michele Van Stavern was standing in the 100 blk N Esser Rd directing traffic out from the north entrance of Boerne High School/Stadium after the Champion High School Football game ended.

Boerne police released the following statement on Facebook:

Officer Van Stavern is currently at the hospital undergoing treatment for the injuries she sustained when she was struck by the vehicle Friday night.
