What's the difference between astronomical fall and meteorological fall?

Our normal high temperature will begin to drop and it is a downward slope from here!

SAN ANTONIO — Meteorological fall is less than two weeks away and it’s different than astronomical fall, which is the official start to the fall season.

Meteorological fall is based on the annual temperature cycle and our calendar year. What does this mean for San Antonio?

Our normal high temperature will begin to drop and it is a downward slope from here! Last Friday, our normal high temperature was 97 degrees, but it is now 96 degrees. It may only be a degree difference, but by September 15th, our normal high temperature will fall 6 degrees.

Fast forward to October 1st, our normal high will be in the upper 80s, and by Halloween, it'll be in the upper 70s. Typically, there are a lot of ups and downs in our temperatures in October. Last year, we had days where high temperatures were in the 50s!

Astronomical fall is the official start to the fall season and it's when the sun passes directly over the equator. This happens twice a year during the fall and spring equinox.

This year, the fall equinox falls on Monday, September 23rd. Equinox in Latin means equal night. In fact, we are seeing less and less daylight each day as we get closer to winter! Astronomical seasons refer to the position of the Earth in relation to the sun.

From a meteorologist's point of view, it’s not too early to decorate for fall since meteorological fall starts September 1st. Happy decorating!
