Weather Minds: Welcome to the wettest month of the year. How much rain can we expect?

Just six years, May saw over 13 inches of rain dumped on the Alamo City. Why is this month so wet?

SAN ANTONIO — Welcome to the month of May, which tends to be the busiest and wettest month of the year for San Antonio.

Just how wet can we get? Let's take you back to our top three, starting with 1935, when we had over 14 inches of rain that May.

The second-wettest was much more recent. In 2013, we recorded over 13 inches and, at number three, 1987 saw over 12-and-a-half inches.

Of course we want rain, but not quite that much. So what's going on this month that makes things so wet? It's a combination of two things: First, we have an active southern branch in the jet-stream, which pumps in ample moisture.

The second thing playing a role is a more active weather pattern, which means more cold fronts and low-pressure systems. Simply put, more moisture plus more lows plus more fronts, equals more opportunities for rain.

And what can we expect out of this May? According to the National Weather Service, the eastern half of Texas could see more chances for flooding this May. San Antonio is just on the outside of this elevated threat.
