New Braunfels Civic and Convention Center opens as warming center as power outages continue during winter storm

The goal is to provide free help to stranded drivers and anyone who needs power or warm shelter until power is reliably restored.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — City leaders  announced that due to the winter storm and resulting power outages, they would open the New Braunfels Civic and Convention Center as a warming center at 4 p.m. on Wednesday night.

The goal is to provide free help to stranded drivers and anyone who needs power or warm shelter until power is reliably restored.

“Although this unprecedented winter storm has been challenging on a number of levels, the New Braunfels community is doing what it always does…rally together to find ways to help one another,” said New Braunfels Mayor Rusty Brockman. “Our hope is that the Warming Center at the Civic Center provides some help and comfort to those in need of electricity, warmth, and other resources while our community deals with continued winter weather and power outages.”

Food and cots will be available, but everyone is encouraged to bring their own food, drinks, blankets, clothes, and medicine. Coronavirus precautions will be in place, and pets are not allowed.

Officials said the shelter may be impacted by rolling blackouts, but they have generators. To see if there is space available, call 830-221-4002.
