SAN ANTONIO — With a cold front slamming into South Texas, do you have a game plan to save energy – and money on your electric/gas bill?

CPS Energy says with temperatures possibly dipping below freezing, it’s a good chance to put these energy-saving tips into place:

  • Get your heating system inspected by a licensed and bonded professional.
  • Program your thermostat to stay between 68-70 degrees.
  • Wear warm clothing (layers work well) to help you stay comfortable indoors instead of adjusting the thermostat.
  • Adjust your ceiling fans by making sure the blades are rotating clockwise during winter at a low speed to pull cool air up. Home Depot's website explains this in detail.

CPS Energy also has some other safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Never use a stove/oven as a space heater.
  • Test your smoke/carbon monoxide alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home (most people do this when Daylight Saving Time ends/begins).
  • Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed in a central location outside sleeping areas.
  • Keep flammable liquids and spray cans at least three feet from heating equipment.
  • When using a natural gas space heater, leave a window open a couple of inches for proper ventilation.

Did you know? CPS Energy was established in 1860 and it's the largest public power, natural gas and electric company in the U.S.
