CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As people are starting to spend more time outdoors, there has been an increase of beachgoers throughout the Coastal Bend area.

Padre Island National Seashore officials say that they have seen a lot of trash washing up on the beach due to many beach cleanups being canceled.

“Our volunteer group, The Trashbusters, is still hard at work and said they picked up over 600 bags of trash in May, but they could really use your help," stated Padre Island National Seashore officials in a social media post.

Padre Island National Seashore officials say if you are heading out to the beach, simply take a trash bag with you, and you can do a small cleanup with your family and friends.

"Every little bit makes a huge difference," added PINS officials.

Some Padre Island National Seashore visitors do just that. Back on May 18, Ron and Carol Barrett did a beach cleanup in about a half-mile stretch and collected 89 sandals.

Officials from the Padre Island National Seashore say it’s a good time to remind everyone to keep their shoes and belongings far enough away from the water that waves won’t be able to reach them and wash them away into the sea.

"So, when you settle down at the beach and leave your belongings behind as you go for a swim, make sure you leave plenty of room that even if the tide starts to come in, your shoes won’t be joining you for a swim,” stated PINS officials on the Facebook post.

There are plenty of beach cleanup groups that can be found on social media if you would like to get involved in cleaning up beaches along the Texas coast.

One local group called Beach Keepers meets at parks along Ocean Drive as well as beaches on North Padre Island to focus on different parts of our coastal environment.

Another local resident, Rhea Chavis, has started a beach cleanup through the Facebook group, "Corpus Christi Moms".
