UTSA coach Frank Wilson fires offensive coordinator Frank Scelfo

Frank Scelfo had been the Roadrunners' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach since Frank Wilson succeeded Larry Coker as head coach in January 2016.
UTSA senior quarterback Dalton Sturm, passing against Rice this season, has completed 121 of 185 passes for 1,583 yards and 13 touchdowns this season.

UTSA's sputtering offense cost offensive coordinator coach Frank Scelfo his job Sunday.

Head coach Frank Wilson has relieved Scelfo of his duties, effectively immediately, UTSA announced in a news release.

"Earlier today I met with Coach Scelfo and came to a decision that has the best interests of our program in mind," Wilson said in the release. "I sincerely appreciate all of his hard work and dedication over the last two seasons and I wish him nothing but the very best."

Wilson hired Scelfo as UTSA's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after succeeding Larry Coker in January 2016. Scelfo, 58, had been a senior offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars for three seasons before joining Wilson's staff.

The Roadrunners' offense failed to score a touchdown in its last two games of the regular season. UTSA fell to Louisiana Tech 20-6 on the road Saturday, finishing with a season-low 201 yards of total offense. The Bulldogs held the Roadrunners to 110 yards rushing and 91 passing.

The Roadrunners finished the regular season 98th among 130 FBS in total offense with an average of 387 yards -- 184.5 rushing and 202.8 passing. UTSA was 103rd in scoring (23.5). The Roadrunners were No. 56 and No. 94, respectively, in rushing and passing.

UTSA finished its seventh regular season 6-5 overall and 3-5 in Conference USA.

The loss to Louisiana Tech came a week after freshman Jared Sackett kicked a 40-yard field goal with two seconds to lift the Roadrunners to a 9-7 victory over Marshall that made UTSA bowl eligible for the second consecutive year.

Although the Roadrunners have qualified for a bowl bid, they aren't guaranteed an invitation. UTSA is among 10 C-USA schools that finished the season with at least six victories, the threshold for bowl eligibility. Bowl invitations will be announced on Sunday, Dec. 3.

Wide receivers coach Jeff Kastl will handle the play-calling duties for the Roadrunners' bowl game, Wilson said in the release.
