LIVE BLOG: Portland catches fire, beats Spurs 121-108

The Spurs are looking to start the season 2-0 as LaMarcus Aldridge returns to his old stomping grounds as the Portland Trail Blazers host the Silver and Black.

FOURTH QUARTER

Spurs lose 121-108

The Portland Trail Blazers just never cooled down after things got kicking for them in the second quarter. Until the Spurs get some true point guards in their lineup and they figure out how to defend running and hot-shooting teams, they'll have games like this one.

Twelve points from LaMarcus Aldridge on a night when he plays 36 minutes will rarely be good enough to win. But DeMar DeRozan continues to be a baller as he finishes with 28 points on 11-22 shooting and 6-6 from the line.

THIRD QUARTER

Spurs down 97-82

Demar DeRozan continues to astound. He's up to 20 points. Bryn Forbes has even caught fire as he's got 17, but Portland has been too much tonight. They're 13-26 on their threes tonight and they continued that roll they got in in the second quarter. They're up to 56.1 shooting from the field overall too, but it's CJ McCollum and Damien Lillard that are killing San Antonio as they each have 22 points and are a combined 7-13 from beyond the arc.

LaMarcus Aldridge has been a non-factor at 4-10 shooting with eight points and Rudy Gay looks like he may have tweaked that heel injury but he's got 12 points in 23 minutes so far tonight.

SECOND QUARTER

Spurs down 59-50

The Spurs offensive picked up a little bit in the second quarter but the defense completely disappeared. The Trail Blazers exploded for 37 second quarter points and they're shooting 53.5 percent from the field including 43.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Pau Gasol's eight points was a big help in not letting Portland run away with it and DeMar DeRozan is up to 16 points on the day. But the Spurs need to pick things up on both sides of the court if they want to get back into this one.

FIRST QUARTER

Spurs tied at 22

The ball movement wasn't there for the Spurs starters the way it was in the opener in a relatively low scoring frame. But the second unit played much better together, especially on defense. To his credit, though, DeMar DeRozan's already got nine points.

Play of the quarter was Davis Bertans, who had this awesome rebound-reverse layup as part of his five points:

The San Antonio Spurs are 1-0 to start the season and any worries about a slow start with so many new players were put to rest early in the season opener.

The new Big 3 (LaMarcus Aldridge, Rudy Gay, and DeMar DeRozan) are looking to make it 2-0 as LA returns to Portland to take on the Trail Blazers.
