Father and son back together with Medina Valley football

You might say that football and family have come full circle for Chris and Eric Soza. They will always be father and son, but now, on the fields at Medina Valley High School, they are colleagues.

Father and son, together again. But this time, it’s a little different.

“I haven't been with him since high school really,” Eric Soza said.

“I didn't think I had a chance [to bring him here], actually,” Chris Soza said of his chances to work with his son. “He did well at the collegiate level.”

How well? Last year, Eric won the Peach Bowl over Florida State as an assistant coach at the University of Houston.

“I had a great time at Houston. [In] my two years there, I learned a lot, but it was something inside me that said, ‘You know what? You might need to try the high school level,’” Eric said.

“Growing up around two educators his entire life, I think maybe he felt that his calling was at the high school level,” Chris said.

So after dad was hired in Castroville, he filled out a staff, which, as the football world turns, included his son as the new offensive coordinator.

“It didn't really shock me. Our family is very close and I think he has his values right,” Chris said. “I've always coached quarterbacks and it is gonna be hard to give them up, but I'm giving them up to a great quarterback, himself.”

“I'll believe it when I see it,” Eric said of his dad letting him handle the quarterbacks. “It is very humbling, and it is a great responsibility that i will not take lightly.”

Medina Valley has some history and the Sozas are hoping to add to it.

“The biggest compliment that a youngster can give a parent is to follow in their footsteps,” Chris said.

“We are learning lots about each other and it has been great,” Eric said. “And there is never a bad time to spend a lot of time with your dad.”
