#SouthernFire: Fire at 5,366 acres, 100% contained in East San Diego County

Three single-family homes and two other buildings were destroyed in the fire, according to an update Monday by Cal Fire.

Thursday 8 a.m. update

The Southern Fire off Great Southern Overland, Agua Caliente in San Diego County remains 5,366 acres and 100% contained.

Wednesday 7:00 a.m. update

According to Cal Fire, the Southern Fire off Great Southern Overland, Aqua Caliente in San Diego County remains 5,366 acres and 90% contained.

Tuesday 6:26 p.m. update

Cal Fire's update on the Southern Fire put the acreage at just over 5,300 and the fire is now 80% contained. Photos from cleanup Tuesday (seen below) show rubble and burned plants in the area.

Tuesday 11:00 a.m. update

The Fire is currently 5,184 acres and is now 65% contained. Firefighters have been working day and night, and continue to make great progress. Please remember to drive cautiously if in the area. 

Monday 5:25 p.m. update

Containment on the Southern Fire grew to 55% Monday, according to an update by Cal Fire San Diego. The update also included that three single-family homes and two other buildings were destroyed in the fire. 

Firefighters will continue working throughout the night to improve containment lines, according to Cal Fire. 

Monday 12:15 p.m. update

Evacuation orders have been lifted for the Butterfield Ranch and surrounding community according to Cal Fire.  The road closures along S - 2 have also been lifted.  Officials still request that people avoid the area if possible as firefighters will still be on scene continuing until the fire is 100% contained and out.

The fire remains at 5,184 acres burned and 25% containment.

Monday 7:30 a.m. update

Cal Fire updated the acreage count down from the 6,500 acres reported on Sunday evening to 5,184 acres burned after they were able to complete more specific mapping of the burn area on Monday morning.

The total containment remains at 25%.

Sunday 7:50 p.m. update

Cal Fire San Diego continues to battle the blaze burning southeast of San Diego that started Saturday around 5 p.m.

As of Sunday evening, the fire has burned 6,500 acres and is 25% contained.  

The temporary evacuation point is still available for those who have been displaced by the fire. American Red Cross teams are at 39545 Great Southern Overland Stage Route, near the Agua Caliente General Store. 

According to a Sunday update, the signage will direct to continue traveling south about 1/4 mile, to the ranger station where volunteers are staffed to assist.

Sunday 7 a.m. update

Cal Fire San Diego continues to fight a vegetation fire located on Great Southern Overland, in the community of Shelter Valley southeast of Julian on Sunday. Strong winds of 40-60 mph were observed overnight by CalFire which helped to fuel the fire's growth.

As of Sunday morning around 6:00 a.m., the fire had been reported to have burned approximately 2,900 acres towards the southeast. Originally reported around 5 p.m. on Saturday, the fire expanded quickly in size with the evening wind.

At least 500 people have been evacuated from Butterfield Ranch campground to Agua Caliente County Park and 3 structures have been destroyed. 

CalFire has named the fire the #SouthernFire.

Red Cross tweeted that volunteers are headed to an evacuation point at Agua Caliente Campgrounds, 39545 Great Southern Overland Stage Route.  

The San Diego Humane Society is supporting those that require assistance with animal evacuations related to the fire.  Those that need help with their animals should call the Dept of Animal Services at 619.236.2341.
