House Democrats sing 'We Shall Overcome' shame GOP during sit-in

Democrats in the United States House of Representatives are prepared to pull an all-nighter, demanding a vote on gun control legislation as they hold a sit-in on the house floor.

While GOP leaders in the house called for a recess, many Democrats are using social media to take pictures and stream live video as they refuse to back down.

It should be noted that it is against house rules to take pictures or video from the house floor, but the GOP has been largely ignoring the actions of Democrats.

When Republicans have attempted to conduct official business, Democrats have shouted them down with chants of “shame” and “no bill, no break.”

Congressman Joaquin Castro, from San Antonio, is among the Democrats that have participated in the sit-in and spoke about the need for gun control using examples of recent shootings and violence in San Antonio.

At one point, when Republicans held a vote on a separate issue, house Democrats started singing “We Shall Overcome,” a song associated with the civil rights movement of the 1960’s.

Congressman John Lewis, who led that movement among other prominent civil rights figures, is among the Democrats participating in the demonstration on the house floor.
