Rangel, Lopez to advance to run-off in Texas House District 125 race

Five candidates were in the running to succeed former state Rep. Justin Rodriguez representing the district on San Antonio's northwest side.

SAN ANTONIO — Republican Fred A. Rangel and Democrat Ray Lopez were the top two vote-getters in a special election for Texas House District 125 on Tuesday night. They will advance to a run-off election to fill the vacant seat.

Rangel had 37.96 percent of the vote as the only Republican in the race.

Lopez had to hold off a tight challenge from Democrat Coda Rayo-Garza, who was just 22 votes behind in third place.

Lopez had 19.41 percent, while Rayo-Garza was third at 19.05 percent and Art Reyna had 17.11 percent. Steve Huerta finished with 6.47 percent of the vote.

The district is on San Antonio’s northwest side and covers much of the Bandera Road corridor.

The four Democrats and one Republican were running to finish the term of Justin Rodriguez (D), who resigned to accept an appointment to the Bexar County Commissioners Court after Precinct 2 Commissioner Paul Elizondo died in December.

The race will go to a run-off, as none of the candidates reached the 50 percent of votes needed to win in the first round of voting. A potential run-off election date has not been set.
