ELECTION 2018: Valdez to face Abbott in November; Roy, Kopser, Ortiz Jones advance

Lupe Valdez becomes the first Latina to become a major party nominee for Texas governor. She will face Gov. Greg Abbott in November.

Bexar County residents went to the polls Tuesday for party primary runoff elections to decide on nominees in several key races.

Both Republicans and Democrats squared off for the chance to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith in District 21. Republican Chip Roy defeated Matt McCall by about 1,700 votes with 99 percent of precincts reporting, while Democrat Joseph Kopser defeated Mary Street Wilson, 58 percent to 42 percent, for their party's spot on the November ballot.

In U.S. House District 23, Gina Ortiz Jones defeated Rick Treviño with 68 percent of the vote and will be the Democratic candidate to face incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Will Hurd in November.

Democrat Lupe Valdez pulled away from Andrew White in a statewide runoff to become the party's nominee to face incumbent Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. She had 53 percent of the vote with 94 percent of precincts reporting.

Steve Allison defeated Matt Beebe for the Republican nomination for Texas House District 121, gaining 57 percent of the vote.

Meanwhile, longtime incumbent Paul Elizondo narrowly defeated Queta Rodriguez for the Democratic nomination for Bexar County Commissioner in Precinct 2, coming out ahead by 372 votes out of more than 10,000 cast.
