LIVE OAK, Texas — IKEA will open its new location, the company's first in south Texas, in Live Oak on Feb. 13. But people can start lining up at 5 a.m. for the grand opening, which will begin with a traditional ceremony.
"It's a Scandinavian tradition," said Store Manager Deidre Goodchild. "Instead of cutting a ribbon we actually saw a log. So it's a little more challenging, but a lot of fun."
The store has hired 250 permanent employees and 100 seasonal employees – most of them local – to staff the store.
IKEA says it's more than just a furniture shop, and has its sights set on investing in the community.
"It isn't just about selling furniture. For us it's about creating a better everyday life for the many," Goodchild said. "Here, that's about furnishing solutions, but as an organization we do that in many ways by supporting the communities around our stores, around our suppliers."
