SAN ANTONIO – Donald Trump commented on the way San Antonio mayor, Ivy Taylor, handled the police officers who wore “Make America Great Again” hats when the presidential candidate was in town last week.
“I was so sad to hear it. You can imagine if they had put on a crooked Hillary hat they would have been just fine. It's so sad to hear it. I assume he's a democratic mayor,” Trump said.
“It's a woman, yep, Ivy Taylor, Democrat,” said radio talk show host Joe Pags.
“She should be ashamed of herself,” said Trump. “They are incredible, brave people and for her to be criticizing them she should be ashamed of herself.”
In the new interview, Trump reacted to news that the San Antonio police officers who wore the Trump caps during a photo-op with the nominee would be punished.
Those officers did violate city policy, as the Mayor pointed out, and moments after Trump's interview aired, KENS 5 caught up with Mayor Taylor for her reaction.
“We want to make sure we have a strong working relationship between our officers and our community,” said Mayor Taylor. “When officers violate policy by engaging in political activity, that jeopardizes that.”
Asked if Mayor Taylor had heard about Trump talking about the hat incident she said yes, and that Trump's comments were not surprising.
