Thousands of CPS customers without power as major wind impacts San Antonio

Nearly 14,000 CPS customers were experiencing outages around 4:45 p.m. Thursday due to major wind gusts.

SAN ANTONIO — Major wind gusts on Thursday afternoon resulted in drastic power outages, affecting as many as 13,800 CPS customers across the San Antonio metro late in the afternoon.

Among the most affected areas are central-west San Antonio, including Meadow Village and United Westwood, and the northeast part of the region, impacting Valley Forge and the area just west of Converse. As of 6 p.m., the number of affected residents was down to just over 4,500.

In the map below from earlier in the afternoon, the red circles indicate areas with major outages affecting customers in the thousands. You can click here for the most updated map.

Officials with CPS say the gusts can cause trees and powerlines to sway, leading to outages. They said they had not received reports of trees having fallen on powerlines as of 5 p.m. However, if you do see a line that has been knocked down, assume it is live and report it by either calling CPS Energy of 911.

The company says crews are at the ready to respond to outages throughout the night should the situatoin arise.
