SAN ANTONIO – Ten weeks from now, the third graders at Baskin Elementary school will be eating food they grew with their own hands.
Right now, they're focused on watering, learning about nutrition and exercising.
"We’re in the classroom all day, so being able to be outside and participating means a lot," said third grade lead teacher Maryann Felix.
It's all part of Texas A&M Extension Services' Learn, Grow, Eat and Go program. The extension has worked with Baskin Elementary before, so the fit was natural, said Ruby Zavala.
“What it does is it really incorporates gardening and nutrition into an easy ten week program," Zavala said.
The third graders are growing broccoli, cabbage and marigolds. Plus they're also learning to keep their minds and bodies fit through this program.
"They’re a school that’s very interested in teaching their kids more about nutrition and how to be healthy being physically fit and eating better," Zavala said.
Not only did the kids build their own garden beds, Felix said most of them have never seen where their food comes from.
“They got their hands dirty, they were excited to touch the soil, a lot of them were never able to do that before," she said.
Harvest time is set for December.
