8 dead in crash after DPS chase in Val Verde County

A Department of Public Safety spokesperson said the crash occurred following a chase between the vehicle and DPS troopers. The driver was taken into custody.

VAL VERDE COUNTY, Texas — Eight people are dead in a major head-on crash after a chase involving Department of Public Safety troopers, the Val Verde County Sheriff's Office confirmed with KENS 5.

The incident occurred outside Del Rio around 1:40 p.m. Monday afternoon. A DPS spokesperson said the crash stemmed from a pursuit involving troopers and a red Dodge Ram along US Highway 277. According to the sheriff's office, all eight people who died were in that vehicle and two people in the Ford F-150 they hit were taken to a hospital in San Antonio, along with one survivor from the other truck. 

They said that the driver of the suspect vehicle fled the scene, but arrested and taken to Val Verde Regional Medical Center. He has been identified as Sebastian Tolliver, 24, and faces pending charges.
