Residents on the city's north side are fed up after their mailboxes were broken into several times over the last few months.

The brazen suspects continue to strike across the Stone Oak area and have yet to be caught.

“Just frustration, it’s extremely frustrating,” Garrett Funk said.

Residents are sick of going out to check their mail only to discover that their mailboxes have been busted open with no mail inside.

“It’s really frustrating because I worry about my private information getting stolen. They were getting in there especially when we were getting our W2 forms and that was really concerning because our social security number,” said Ashley Chote.

The problem started around the holidays and is happening all across Stone Oak. Eyewitness News is aware of at least seven reported areas that have been hit and multiple times.

Jana Yonker said she’s never had a problem like this in the 19 years she has owned her home.

An official with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said the theft is happening from northwest San Antonio to the northeast side and the agency is investigating.

Stealing mail is a federal crime, but it’s clearly not deterring the persons responsible.

“It’s pretty brazen to do this. I mean it’s right next to a house here, right across this house here,” Funk said.

Some residents said they’ve started resorting to getting PO Boxes until a safer solution is found.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service recommends neighborhoods make sure their cluster mailboxes are free from any shrubbery. The agency also offers up to $10,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of mail thieves. If you have any information that could lead to an arrest call 1-877-876-2455.
