SAN ANTONIO -- A woman celebrated a huge milestone, her 109th birthday.
Maria Gallegos Lopez's clinic, WellMed, threw her a party Thursday afternoon. Staff members and Tejano artist Flaco Jimenez joined her family for the celebration.
Maria is a native of Monterrey, Mexico and only speaks Spanish. Her daughter, Rosemary Galvan, said her mother felt happy and grateful for the party.
Maria moved to San Antonio when she was 18-years-old. She's witnessed much of the growth and changes that have happened in the Alamo City. She gave up her home for the construction of the Tower of the Americas and Hemis Fair '68. Maria has also, lived through the 'Great Flood of San Antonio'.
"She remembers them pulling the bodies out of the river," said Galvan.
EyeWitness News asked Galvan what Maria's secret is to living longer.
"That's what everybody asks. Chile. On everything and not the mild one either," said Galvan.
Maria's actual birthday is on July 10. WellMed serves more than 280 thousand patients in Texas and Florida. I said there's only one other patient in the WellMed network who is older than Maria.
