June is Alzheimer's awareness month. Wednesday, Sam Ash Music hosted its second annual "Longest Day" event to raise awareness about the disease and funds for the Alzheimer's Association for research to find a cure.

Angela Perez helped organize the event that brought several bands from across Texas to the store for an all day concert. Money raised from a silent auction and raffle were donated to the Alzheimer's Association.

Wednesday also marked the official start of summer 2017 and the "longest day of the year."

Perez's mother passed away from Alzheimer's more than a year ago.

The disease currently kills more people than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, more than five million Americans are affected by the degenerative brain disease. Perez hopes that within our lifetime, a cure for Alzheimer's will be found.

She said one of her greatest joys of organizing the "Longest Day" is bringing together families who are affected by the disease so they can share their stories.
