Tricentennial week kicks off with Day of Reflection

San Antonio began the celebration of its 300th birthday with a ceremony in front of San Fernando Cathedral.

It was on the first of May in 1718 that Mission San Antonio de Valero was founded. Tuesday night, the city kicked off a week of festivities commemorating our tricentennial at Main Plaza.

The saga - a light show depicting San Antonio history - is playing on the front of San Fernando Cathedral and the plaza is still filled with people. This is commemorative week for our tricentennial and it began with a faith filled service here Tuesday night.

The city was founded in faith, and Tuesday evening, 21 spiritual leaders of different religions spoke and prayed.

The church bells rang at 8:18 across the city. That’s 20:18 in military time. The mayor lit the commemorative flame and it will be lit every evening fir the next 5 days.

Tricentennial activities continue all week with fireworks along the Mission Reach Friday.
