Moms Demand Action SA chapter reacts to Santa Fe High School shooting

DeFelice said she's hopeful Governor Greg Abbott and lawmakers will make sweeping gun-reform changes this next legislative session.

Gun control. Two words that often polarize this country even in times of tragedy, but because of Friday's shooting in Santa Fe it will remain a hot topic. Members with the group 'Moms Demand Action' say the time to act is now.

Becca DeFelice, the president of the local chapter, said their membership is going up, because more people are demanding action. She also said she's hopeful Governor Greg Abbott and lawmakers will make sweeping gun-reform changes this next legislative session.

"Kids shouldn't feel like they are going into a battleground when they're going to school," she said.

DeFelice said she was distraught when she heard about the mass shooting at Santa Fe High School.

"I thought about all those parents who didn't get their children back at the end of the day, and that is heartbreaking. When I got my kid at the end of the day of school, I hugged her so tight," she said.

For years, this mom has been pushing for common-sense gun reform. She said the tragedy in Santa Fe might be the wake-up call for lawmakers, as it was in Florida. After the mass shooting in Parkland that killed 17 people, Florida's governor passed legislation on gun regulations.

"There were extreme risk protection orders, a waiting period, raising the minimum age to purchase a firearm, and my hope is that Governor Abbott has the moral courage to do the same, even with the opposition of the NRA," she said.

She said the fight for gun reform is only getting stronger. DeFelice said the local chapter has grown tremendously, especially right after Sutherland Springs. She said there are simple solutions when it comes to changing gun laws.

"We are talking about red flag laws, or a background check on every gun sale, or ensuring that everyone who carries a firearm in public - concealed or openly - that they are licensed or trained," she said.

The Moms Demand Action group has a huge event called 'Wear Orange' on June 2, which is the same day as National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
