One by one, gravesite after gravesite, the hot weather didn’t stop volunteers from placing an American flag on all 115,000 gravesites at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
“Memorial Day means I need to serve the people who have passed away in battle,” one young volunteer said.
Placing all those flags at every gravesite is a Memorial Day tradition that goes back decades.
“Memorial Day is a day when people do something important and special for the veterans that have fought for their freedom,” another volunteer said.
For many families volunteering on Friday, it’s a tribute to their own parents and grandparents who served.
It serves as a tribute and a thank you for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
