Volunteers place flags at over 115,000 gravesites at Ft. Sam National Cemetery

A flag at every gravesite was the goal of a group of volunteers at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery on Friday.

One by one, gravesite after gravesite, the hot weather didn’t stop volunteers from placing an American flag on all 115,000 gravesites at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

“Memorial Day means I need to serve the people who have passed away in battle,” one young volunteer said.

Placing all those flags at every gravesite is a Memorial Day tradition that goes back decades.

“Memorial Day is a day when people do something important and special for the veterans that have fought for their freedom,” another volunteer said.

For many families volunteering on Friday, it’s a tribute to their own parents and grandparents who served.

It serves as a tribute and a thank you for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
