Military City, USA pays tribute to fallen heroes

Military City USA is full of people who are taking a moment this weekend to pay tribute to our heroes.

SAN ANTONIO — On Memorial Day we remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice: laying down their lives while defending our freedom.

Military City USA is full of people who are taking a moment this weekend to pay tribute to our heroes.

“It’s very important, probably emotional for some people but very, very important,” said Blake Gruber from Boy Scout Troop 412.

Those emotions are at the forefront today for his family. They’re visiting his grandparents’ grave sites in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

It’s one gesture of gratitude from the Grubers for their service.

“They saved us and they helped our world,” said Matthew Sanchez who is part of Boy Scout Troop 412.

He was among dozens at the military grave site.

The National Cemetery offers a place for many who are hoping to honor the true meaning of Memorial Day.

“They died for our freedom and everything they did for us,” said Joshua Niday.

For the occasion, more than 110,000 head stones were graced with a flag.

Dozens of volunteers braved the scorching sun to pay tribute.

“Even though I put in hard work to do this it still doesn’t even amount to anything that they did,” said Olivia Kopchak.

It’s been a somber weekend remembering and honoring the fallen.

“It really amazes me how many people love our country and go off and fight for us whether it be overseas or anywhere,” said Kaitlyn Napolitano.

“I feel like it’s a good tribute because they tributed to us by serving so we’re tribute back by placing flags,” said Andrew Napolitano.

In the quietness of the grave sites comes a chance to send up thoughts to those who have passed on.

“What I would say is ‘thank you for serving our country and now I think it’s your time, I think Jesus wants you up there. Thank you so much, goodbye,’” said Danté Dallas Baker.
