Man dies after being hit by police car near Olmos Park

67-year-old Claude Espinosa was hit and killed by a police car driven by an officer who was responding to an aggravated robbery call.

An accident involving a police car left one man dead at the intersection of San Pedro Avenue and El Monte Boulevard Monday night.

According to Carlos Ortiz with the San Antonio Police Department, an eight-year veteran officer was driving to an aggravated robbery call at another location with his lights and sirens on when he hit a pedestrian. The victim was hit into the other lane and struck by another vehicle.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as 67-year-old Claude Espinosa.

According to police, Espinosa was crossing the street in the roadway and not in a crosswalk.

More details, including the officer’s speed, may be released later as the incident is under investigation. The officer was driving Code 3, which allows the officer to drive above the speed limit.

The officer and the other driver who hit the pedestrian were checked out by EMS. No one was transported to the hospital, police said.

Funeral services will be held at Hillcrest Funeral Home.
